Mother’s Day, celebrated in the US on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, celebrated in the US on the third Sunday of June, are the two holidays dedicated to honoring parents past and present. Each holiday in the United States was started independently by women and made an officially recognized calendar day in the 1900s (Mother’s Day in 1914, Father’s Day in 1966).
The women who founded each holiday believed their respective holidays should be celebrated in simple, heartfelt ways that prioritize gratitude over commodification.
For Mother’s Day, the giving of flowers and handwritten cards was intended to be the original celebration. The giving of red carnations in particular was designated for Mother’s Day, and the tradition is to wear a white carnation if your mother has passed in honor of her legacy.
Father’s Day runs in a similar vein, with expressions of gratitude and appreciation being the most important. Much like Mother’s Day, the traditional custom is to wear a red rose if your father is still with us, or a white rose if he has passed.
